FORT WAYNE, Ind. November 26, 2008 - A Fort Wayne firefighter has been placed on medical leave after he became involved in a shoving match with a fire officer, and then collapsed at the scene of a fire at the Willows of Coventry Apartments. NewsChannel 15 camera caught the incident on tape. Fire Chief Pete Kelly told NewsChannel 15 that the firefighter's actions can be linked to stress. A 17-year-old volunteer firefighter in Rockingham County, VA died while responding in his personal vehicle to a fire call early Friday morning. A junior at Spotswood High School died in a car accident Thursday night. It happened in the 1200 block of Island Ford Road near Elkton. Police says 17-year-old Roy Smith III veered off the road, flipped two or three times and landed in the driveway of a home. Smith was ejected from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt.

I decided to post this video because this problem also exists in EMS, Fire ; Police departments. This problem also exists with our junior squad members. We as adults are supposed to be there to protect our young people, and create as safe and educational environment for them, not cause them further harm. Maybe we can all learn something from these young adults, and applaud them for their courage in speaking out. This is the story of two rural teens who had the courage to stand up to bigotry and intolerance in their schools and the determination to tell their stories to the world. Homophobia is one of the last permissible forms of prejudice. Its effects are especially acute for youth, who often suffer alone and in silence. Two thirds of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth experience harassment or violence in school, and the suicide rate for this group is four times the average. When C.J. Bills is gay bashed in the school locker room, then arrested for disorderly conduct because he protests to an administrator about the harassment he has experienced, he decides to fight back by making a documentary about discrimination. With his family's help, he also initiates an investigation by the state human rights commission and shames the school district into developing an anti-bullying and diversity training program. C.J.'s documentary project also leads him to Tim Dahle, a former high school student who challenged the years of anti-gay harassment he suffered in a neighboring town. In Tim's case, the school district that failed to protect him agreed to one of the largest sexual harassment settlements in history, sending a signal to school districts around the country that such behavior can be costly. We Belong demonstrates that young people have the power to change their communities and the world, and that helping youth to tell their stories, in their own way and on camera, is enlightening, empowering, and effective.

October 10, 2008 - 8 St. Louis firefighters hurt in crash St. Louis Post-Dispatch ST. LOUIS — Eight St. Louis firefighters were injured in the collision of two fire engines at Martin Luther King Drive and Taylor Avenue early this afternoon. All were taken to hospitals for examination. None were critically injured, said Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson, who was at the crash. The two fire engines were headed to a fire about 12:45 p.m. about a block from where the crash happened. The engines were from Engine Co. 10 and Engine Co. 28. Seven of the eight injured firefighters are expected to be released from the hospital this afternoon. The eighth firefighter suffered a concussion and will be kept at Barnes-Jewish hospital overnight for observation, Jenkerson said. The most seriously injured firefighter, whose identity is not being released, was a jump man in the ladder truck from Engine Co. 28. A jump man sits in the cab of the fire truck and under a canopy. Jenkerson said the details of the accident are under investigation

There is still no determination as to why a 32-year-old Baltimore County paramedic/firefighter died while on duty Wednesday night. /nBrian Neville, an eight year veteran, was filling in as acting EMS officer, at the Texas station on York road. He was found dead Thursday morning.

As if we don't have enough sh*t to deal with! A man who had grown tired of waiting for a local road to reopen because of a serious wreck got out of his car, stripped off his shirt and then attacked a paramedic on Thursday, and an Eyewitness News 5 photojournalist caught it on tape. "I kind of glanced to see where I could see him take a step. I kind of had him in my vision, and as soon as I moved, I thought maybe I shouldn't have moved. I glanced over to see him take a swing at me," said EMSA paramedic Jason Duncan. He said he's sore but will be OK. Police said they believe the man got upset because roads near Britton Road and Midwest Boulevard were closed. They believe he had just tired of waiting for them to reopen. Officers and paramedics worked to get the man to the ground. Even there, the man screamed at officers saying they were going to have to kill him.
