Randolph NJ Firefighter - Bail Out

Randolph NJ - Firefighter Allen Bell from Dover Fire Dept. in New Jersey captured this CLOSE CALL video of a firefighter who had to bail out of a 2nd floor window while conducting a search for a missing resident. As conditions worsened, the firefighter made it to a 2nd floor window and called out for a ladder. This put firefighter Bells RIT team into action by grabbing the nearest extension ladder to assist the firefighter. This video shows the firefighter falling from the window to the ground and other firefighters carrying him to the front of the house. This video should be used as a training tool. There are several training classes and videos offered that show proper technique in "ladder bail outs". You and your dept. should learn these techniques so this does not happen to you. His injuries were minor, but he could have suffered worse injuries. Also, the FC3 Fire Helmet Camera (www.FireVideo.net) was used in the video and shows that this camera can be another "tool for the helmet", and if used properly, can assist in training, review and investigation. Below is the story from the Randolph News.

RANDOLPH -- A stubborn fire swept through a two-story house this morning, killing a woman and injuring a township firefighter, authorities said.

Norma Miller, 84, lived in the wood-frame house on Carrell Road with two of her sons, both of whom were able to escape from the house unhurt, firefighters said.

One firefighter, whose name was not released, was injured when he fell out of a second-story window. He was caught by fellow firefighters and taken to Morristown Memorial Hospital. He was not seriously hurt, Randolph Fire Chief William Wagner said.

The blaze began about 11:30 a.m. in a first-floor bedroom, and flames spread through the ceiling, according to Wagner and the Morris County Prosecutors Office. The brothers were on the first floor when the fire began, and their mother was upstairs and unable to get out of the house, said Capt. Jeffrey Paul, a spokesman for Morris County Prosecutor Robert Bianchi.

Smoke billowed out of the house and could be seen hundreds of yards down the road.

At first, I thought it was fog, said Emerson Crooks, a neighbor. Then, I opened the door and smelled smoke.

Firefighters from a half dozen municipalities responded to the scene and pumped water into the second floor of the home for more than three hours trying to put out what was described as a stubborn blaze.

This is the longest burn Ive seen in 15 years, said Randolph police Lt. Chris Giuliani.

Wagner said firefighters had to use flame-retardant foam from the Brookside Fire Department in Mendham to put out the blaze.

We could not get the water to stick long enough to the wood, the fire chief said late this evening. If it werent for Brookside, wed still be battling the fire.

The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined, and is being investigated by the Morris County Prosecutors Offices Arson Unit along with Randolph police, the Morris County Sheriffs Office Criminal Investigations Section and the Newark Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Miller, who was the mother of a third son, Star-Ledger news and wire editor Jim Miller of Montgomery, was remembered as a generous and friendly neighbor.

She was a nice lady, Crooks said. She was always outside, cleaning and fixing up things. Its a real shame.

Wagner, the fire chief, is a parishioner at the same church Miller attended — the Mount Freedom Presbyterian Church. She was a real nice lady, Wagner said, adding that Miller sang in the church choir.

Wagner said he called the pastor, Linda Gaden, to inform her that one of her parishioners had died.

This was the first fire fatality in Randolph in more than 20 years, the fire chief said. The family dog also died in the fire, officials said.

Volunteers The Series Ep. 3 Teaser

We are a handful of dedicated volunteer firefighters/ems personnel, committed to telling the story of our sacrifice, passion and commitment to protect our home communities, historically and today.

Benjamin Franklin created the first volunteer fire department in the US in 1736. Today, 73% (827,150+) of firefighters in the US are members of VFDs. The series is footage taken from real emergency responses, and interviews of the volunteers involved. Through a combination of amazing response footage shot in HD (and incredible 1st person perspectives using helmet cameras), reality type day-to-day station life, and compelling interviews, we want to educate, entertain and captivate the viewing audience.

We sacrifice a huge portion of our time away from family, to respond to the communities we protect. Through the series we want to increase public awareness, increase support and donations, and show the world how committed we are to being there for them in there darkest hours. We train as hard, and as many hours as the career firefighters, and obtain the same certifications. The volunteers are there for the community, standing ready to respond, for no pay, and most of the time, not even a thank you.

The mission of VTS: It is our goal to increase public awareness and support by telling the stories of these brave men and women. We want to make a difference in each and every volunteer fire/ems house in the world. Whether it means increased donations or just shifting the public paradigm, our purpose is to see volunteer houses thrive, decrease LODD's and see that ALL volunteer company's have the funding to continue to properly support the communities they serve. If we can make a difference in just one volunteer fire/ems house, we feel we will have been successful!

Please take just a moment to pass the message along to someone you feel might enjoy VTS. Thank you all for your continued support in the USA and around the world! Be safe!

++If you are interested in being a sponsor, and wish to give back to your local volunteer fire department, in exchange for commercial space or other forms of advertising with VTS, please contact us at: info@droppingplates.com

++If you are a volunteer FD or EMS unit, and wish to be contacted about participating in the series, please contact me at: info@droppingplates.com

++If you feel compelled to donate money to us, to help us with the production of the series, please contact the nearest local volunteer FD or EMS unit, and write the check to them. If you can not contribute money, please commit to personally thanking a volunteer firefighter/ems.

All Real, All Volunteer! Thanks to the Purcellville Volunteer Fire Department ; the Purcellville Volunteer Rescue Squad and ALL Volunteers for everything you do... for all of us!

Family Rescued From Burning Car

July 21, 2009 - Two brothers who are Milwaukee firefighters were off-duty when their wives called them to the scene of a burning SUV that had a woman and her two young children trapped inside.

Joel and John Rechlitz were among the crowd who worked to rescue the family Sunday afternoon.

The 32-year-old woman from Tennessee was driving the SUV when it hit a tree and burst into flames, police said. Videotape of the rescue shows a group surrounding the flipped, burning vehicle. Two men used pipes to break the windshield. The crowd then pulled out the woman and her 2-year-old daughter.

The woman's 4-year-old son was still trapped.

The Rechlitz brothers took turns reaching for the boy through the windshield, but were unsuccessful at first.

John Rechlitz reached in again but couldn't find the seat belt release; someone gave him a knife to cut the car seat's restraints.

Two Buffalo Firefighters Killed in Blaze

BUFFALO, N.Y. --The first floor of a burning convenience store collapsed into the basement early Monday morning, killing two firefighters. Flag-draped gurneys carrying the bodies were brought out of the two-story building shortly before 10 a.m. as fellow firefighters, some saluting, lined up and took off their helmets. Weeping and distraught people believed to be relatives had been escorted from the scene moments earlier. Authorities could not immediately confirm reports that a third person - possibly a civilian the firefighters tried to rescue - was missing in the basement, a police spokesman said. The fire at the Super Speedy deli was reported just before 4 a.m. The deli is on the ground floor of a corner brick building in a working-class neighborhood on the city's east side. Firefighters were still pouring water on the gutted building hours after the blaze began. "I've been on 36 years and seen every situation happen. We still do what we have to do," said Fire Chief John McFeely. It's always very, very tragic. The guys are so close together, but we've got a job to do. In another half an hour, if there's another fire down the street, we'll be there." Mayor Byron Brown and Fire Commissioner Michael Lombardo were expected to release more information at a midday news conference at the Erie County Medical Center, where the bodies of the two firefighters were taken. The firefighters' names were not immediately released. There was no immediate information on a possible cause of the fire. The last Buffalo firefighter killed in the line of duty was 31-year-old Michael Seguin, who died July 4, 1997, when a roof collapsed during a house fire. The last time more than one Buffalo firefighter died in the line of duty was on Dec. 27, 1983, when five firefighters were killed in a propane tank explosion at a warehouse - the worst loss of life in the department's 129-year history.
