BUSHKILL TWP., Pa. -- A rescue by police officers of a man trapped inside a burning pickup was all caught on tape.
When officers reached the burning truck off Cherry Hill Road in Bushkill Township, Northampton County around 2:30 Saturday morning, all three grabbed their fire extinguishers.
Brian Stahl, Sr., first assistant chief of the Bushkill Township Volunteer Fire Company, had already started to knock down the flames.
Ofc. Joshua Miller and Cpl. David Marino ran up to the truck to try and get the driver, Roger Blanchard, 22, of Lower Nazareth Township, out.
It obviously sustained damage from the crash, said Marino. I was unable to get the driver door open.
I put my fire extinguisher right inside the passenger side window, said Miller.
Ofc. Miller was able to extinguish it long enough for me to at least get a hold of the male to get him somewhat out of the vehicle, said Marino.
Miller, whose fire extinguisher ran out, went around to the driver's side.
There were a number of small explosions, but the officers didn't let up.
As we're pulling the guy out, his pants are actually on fire, his clothes are kinda melting off him, said Miller.
Seconds after they pulled Blanchard out, there was a much larger explosion.
Miller and Marino dragged Blanchard down a steep embankment and fell.
At that point, I went to help them and that's when I ran down the hill and I fell, said Ofc. Crystal Happel, who broke her nose.
Blanchard was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Fountain Hill, Lehigh County, where he's recovering.
The officers said it was a team effort.
At the end of the day, said Happel, us as a team, everybody together worked together to save that man's life
